Neighbors know that the renovation or reconstruction will reflect the architecture of the surrounding homes. Owner Joel Lerman says it’s a great pleasure to be an integral part of projects that allow for seamless co-existence of old and new.

“Even the new homes we build use design elements and materials that pay homage to the elegant tradition of the neighborhood,” he says. “I think the most exciting projects involve wonderful old homes, where respecting the vernacular of the home is essential. We’ve also worked on transforming bland homes by introducing a new look, turning them into something exceptional.”

Lerman Construction got its start in 1960, and Joel Lerman took it over from his father in 1977. What began as a carpentry business focusing on large housing and apartment developments has evolved into a prominent building and renovation company that continues to seize new markets.

Recently, Joel was approached to work as an owner’s representative on a home being built out of state. Although he’s worked on other projects, this time he had the responsibility of interviewing and selecting the architect, local builder, designer, and landscape architect — thus lifting the burden off the client’s shoulders.

“Especially today, it’s important for a third party to oversee the project and confirm bids, payments, and insurance requirements. This can be a daunting job for an absentee owner, and the amount of money, time, and aggravation that we save pays for itself,” Joel says.

Knowing that the budget and scheduling are critical to a successful project and company, Lerman Corp. strives to work within the client’s taste and budget to create a jewel of a home.

“Our job is to work on the client’s behalf to provide them with their dream at a price they’re comfortable with. We’re striving for quality and satisfaction, not maximum square footage,” Joel says.

Lerman Corp. has completed several renovation projects for Phillip and Lauren Fisher and their parents, as well as Lauren’s beautiful specialty boutique, A Touch of Lace, in Bloomfield Hills.

Regardless of whether the project is big or small, a renovation or a complete custom home, Lerman Corp. strives for complete customer satisfaction, knowing its efforts to that end will maintain business and generate referrals. And the relationship between builder and client doesn’t end after the work is complete. Along with his business partner, Terry Hill, Joel is keen on helping clients with everyday needs and small projects.

“My goal is to create an environment for our clients where we meet their needs while maintaining the esthetic of the home,” says Joel, who also integrates smart house and green technology into his construction, to keep his projects cutting-edge. “We like to let people know that we’re user-friendly.”

Lerman Corp. also has clients whose needs have changed; the company builds and renovates homes to accommodate elevators and handicap-accessible bathrooms and kitchens. For a client who was seriously injured in a car accident, Lerman recently converted the house and a bathroom for handicap access. The client was able to spend the holidays at home, with family members, because Hill rallied his crews to complete the work in just four days.

Joel says he’s been fortunate to be part of some wonderful projects, and says establishing long-term relationships with his clients has always been of utmost importance. In addition to building and renovating, Lerman Corp. does

insurance restoration and regular maintenance like painting, refinishing floors, gutter-cleaning, changing light bulbs, and conducting home visits for clients when they’re out of town. Lerman also does outstanding commercial and retail work.

“We like to take care of our clients’ needs. I take it personally,” Joel says.
